Artist's Description
In a particularly heartening experiment in crystal photomicrography, a mixture of vitamin C, aka ascorbic acid, and stevia, a plant-based sweetener, recrystallized into a wondrous diversity of crystalline forms onto a microscope slide. By using polarizing filters, I can visually accentuate details of those crystal formations, each of which is a story of physics and chemistry in which everything matters: the concentration of the chemicals, the rate of evaporation of the solvent, any tilt of the slide, the angles and placement of the polarizers.
